Self-healing tools are powerful — and there are times when professional support is what is needed. This is not a failure of self-help. It is recognising that some things need more than a private practice can offer. Both are valid. Both can be true at the same time.

What to look for
Trauma-informed
A therapist who understands how trauma affects the body and nervous system — not just the thoughts and beliefs.
Attachment-aware
Someone who understands how early relationships shape adult patterns — and works with that understanding.
Modality fit
Different approaches suit different people: EMDR, IFS (Internal Family Systems), somatic therapy, CBT, psychodynamic work. Ask what approach they use.
The relationship matters most
Research consistently shows that the therapeutic relationship is more important than the modality. If it doesn't feel right, you can leave.
You are allowed to interview them
Ask about their approach, their experience with trauma, what a typical session looks like. A good therapist welcomes this.
